I noticed that most educational settings were very similar aesthetically and functionally… I saw an opportunity to create a more engaging and inspirational setting.

“[Most] importantly designing rooms with the instructional approach and pedagogy: Rooms and settings that are ‘student centered’…”

I was very fortunate to begin my educational career in 1989 with Crayola. My primary responsibility was calling on all school districts public and private, specifically engaging with administrators and educators. I learned that within the educational industry there was a sense of community and purpose. I saw an avenue where I could make a difference. I continued learning and honing my skill set over 25+ years in the educational sector with the following companies:

  • Meteor Education

  • School Specialty

  • Culver-Newlin

  • eSchoolMall

  • OfficeMax

  • Crayola

  • KYA

These companies allowed me to gain insight in the following educational segments:

  • Furniture

  • Construction

  • e-procurement

  • Contracts/Educational code

  • Supplies

  • Flooring, Lighting, & Acoustics

  • Project Management

  • Design

However, with all my learning and experience I noticed that most educational settings were very similar aesthetically and functionally: White walls, generic school carpet, bannister oak laminate desks and tables, blue/brown chairs with black or chrome frame, 30" x 60" laminate/metal teacher desk and traditional lighting. The room was set up with all the furniture in rows with a dry erase board designating the "front of the room" where the teacher would instruct or address the class.

I saw an opportunity to create a more engaging and inspirational setting.
A setting that addressed:

  • Mobile, flexible, and collaborative furniture

  • Branding and Messaging

  • Vertical learning spaces

  • Flooring with design and functionality

  • Customized furniture solutions

  • Integrated technology solutions

  • Lighting, Accent Walls, and Acoustics

More importantly, designing and creating rooms with the instructional approach and pedagogy. Rooms and settings that are "student centered" focused with thought leaders, educators, and administrators all involved in the process to ensure that we are capturing all elements necessary for a high impact learning environment. I also realized the importance of working with school districts to assist in shifting the educational culture to adapt to the change in the new learning environments. Therefore, providing training and development for my clients to help with the transition.

High impact spaces invite students to explore their interests and cultivate a love of learning

In addition to my educational career, my personal life also helped me develop my educational vision and perspective…

I grew up in San Francisco, CA and was educated in a traditional and structured environment. I graduated from Loyola Marymount in 1987 with a public relations degree and a minor in business and communications. In my last year of college, I met my best friend and wife, Laura. Laura also joined the educational sector and became a teacher.  We have enjoyed raising a family together and learning a great deal along the way about our marriage, parenting, each other, and ourselves. We celebrate 31 years of marriage!

When it was time to select an educational path for our children, we like others talked with friends and family to gain insight. We also discussed our own educational experiences both pros and cons. We tried a couple of different settings until we landed in an alternative setting. A multi age program where there was no front of the room, no individual student desk assigned to a child, and each student had their own individualized learning plan. At first, this was very uncomfortable for me because I was educated in a very structured environment. I leaned on Laura as an educator and partner.

Overtime, I noticed my kids were engaged and enjoyed school. From this point on, I realized that there can be different educational settings and not one size fits all. I continued to observe and learn while in the educational industry. I developed a passion for creating innovative solutions wherever I was employed. I thrived on change, innovation, and creativity. Thus, VISION was created in 2020 to work with other educational institutions, administrators, and educators who share the same passion in changing the learning environment. I truly hope and want to make a difference in our world by being a small part in creating lifelong learners by the settings that I create and design.
